ASC Student Management Competition and Career Fair a SuccessPress Release – Submitted by Chuck Berryman, Region IV Director North Central Region IV of the international Associated Schools of Construction met in Nebraska City, Nebraska for its 2002 midyear meeting and annual Student Management Competitions. Special this year was the inclusion of a Career Fair for the participating students and students from the seven states represented in Region IV. The University of Nebraska – Lincoln hosted the midyear meeting. Seven of the eleven universities in the region were represented at the meeting. Reports were given by Chuck Berryman, Region IV Director; Mostafa Khattab, ASC 2nd Vice President; Jim Goedert, Region IV Competition Coordinator; and Bruce Fischer, Region IV Industry Coordinator. Items of importance were new rule changes for next year’s competition and the possibility of expanding the competition by combining with Great Lakes Region III. As a result of Jim Goedert resignation as Competition Coordinator, the Competition Committee, comprised of Scott Seltveit of Moorhead State, Gary Smith of North Dakota State, and Jim Goddard of Kansas State are seeking an individual to replace Goedert. Next year’s events will be at the Lied Center in Nebraska City, NE; February 6-9, 2003. The competition will apply national rules. Bruce Fischer from University of Nebraska - Lincoln organized this year’s Career Fair. This high successful event sported the influx of 21 representatives from 11 contractors. Over 130 students and faculty visited with these companies at their respective booth setups. Companies included Ayars & Ayars Construction from Lincoln, Nebraska; Burns and McDonald from Kansas City, Missouri; Cherne Contracting from Minneapolis, MN; Hensel Phelps Construction from Denver, Colorado; Key Construction from Wichita, Kansas; Peter Kiewit & Sons, Inc. from Omaha, Nebraska; Landscapes Unlimited from Lincoln, Nebraska; Lusardi Construction from San Marcos, California; Martin K. Eby Construction from Wichita, Kansas; Mortenson Company from Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Sampson Construction from Lincoln, Nebraska. The Student Management Competition was the highlight of all of the ASC events. Twenty-one Construction Management teams from eight different universities competed in the Commercial, Heavy Civil, and Design Build divisions. They used real plans and specifications from projects that have already been constructed. The overall intent is to place students in the “real life” project management situations. They must schedule, estimate, run cost analysis, and anticipate issues that will arise as the project is being built. A panel of judges from industry review the hard copies of the students proposed plans for managing and constructing the project. Students are asked to prepare and present their proposed ideas to the panel of judges. This part of the competition brings to light student’s knowledge and ability to work together in an active environment that closely emulates project management reality. In order to facilitate such an environment, the judging panel is comprised of representatives from all facets of the construction industry. This includes the owners, architects, contractors, and engineers. This years competition winners are as follows:
