A big sponsor this year was the Associated General Contractors from our seven state region. They came together this year to financially help us support students attending the conference and competition. They were a visible part of this years events. Associated General Contractors (AGC) Nebraska chapter Building: Walt Broer, President; Heavy Highway: Terry King South Dakota chapter Larry Zikmund Kansas chapter Corey Peterson
The Student Management Competition was the highlight of all of the ASC events. It is still the largest competition of the kind in the United States. Twenty-nine Construction Management teams from eleven different universities competed in the Commercial, Heavy Civil, Design Build, and Residential divisions. They used real plans and specifications from projects that have already been constructed. The overall intent is to place students in the real life project management situations. They must schedule, estimate, run cost analysis, and anticipate issues that will arise as the project is being built. A panel of judges from industry review student submission of their proposed plan for managing and constructing the project. Students are asked to prepare and present their proposed ideas to the panel of judges. This part of the competition brings to light students knowledge and ability to work together in an active environment that closely emulates project management reality. In order to facilitate such an environment, the judging panel is comprised of representatives from all facets of the construction industry. This includes the owners, architects, contractors, and engineers.
Schools competing this year were Central Missouri State, Kansas State University, Iowa State University, North Dakota State University, Minnesota State University at Moorhead, South Dakota State, Southwest Missouri State University, University of Nebraska Lincoln, University of Nebraska Lincoln at Omaha, and University of Northern Iowa.
