Guidelines for SPONSORSHIP at the ASC Student Management Competition
REGION IV STUDENT MANAGEMENT COMPETITION
Guidelines for Sponsorship (revised
April 2003)
Ultimately, a successful student competition depends upon
the selection of an appropriate construction problem. Because of this fact, construction firms can provide a
tremendous educational opportunity to the students by sponsoring the selection
of the regional competition problem.
There are four Industry Committees each of the four areas
of competition (Commercial, Heavy Civil, Design/Build, and Residential).
These committees consist of three companies that rotate the problem statement
within themselves each year. The company that is responsible for that
year's problem statement will be recognized as the major sponsor. The
assisting two sponsors will each have one representative as a member of the three-company
judging panel for their respective division. The major sponsor has the responsibility
to coordinate the competition with the other industry members and with the ASC
Region IV competition committee. Each
sponsor will have two opportunities to sponsor the problem. Rotation would
provide a six year commitment to the competition (major sponsor twice and
assisting sponsor four times).
The responsibilities of major sponsorship are as follows:
-
The size of the project should be between $5 and $10 million dollars.
This range usually provides a challenge to a team consisting of 6
students and 1 coach. It should be noted, however, that the scope of the
problem will dictate the size of the project used. See the
problem
sets for the management competition. This page contains
rules and scoring guides for each of the four divisions.
-
Usually, design development drawings are better than working drawings,
although both types have been used very successfully. It is anticipated that the sponsor would provide one set
of plans and one set of specifications for each team.
-
Typically, the sponsor provides a project their firm has worked on or
completed. It stands to reason
that the major sponsor is then in a unique position to provide the most
knowledgeable judges for the student presentations.
Additionally, the judges are in a position, after the competition, to
provide detailed information about their experience, special problems, solutions, and other
interesting facts which greatly increases the students’ knowledge.
A panel of four (4) judges from the major sponsoring company and one
(1) each from the two co-sponsors is considered optimal (total
of 6).
-
In
order to insure that each competing team has the same perspective of the
problem, it is recommended (but not required) that a project is selected from outside
the region. The region
generally consists of the following states: South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota,
Iowa, and Missouri.
-
Major
sponsoring
companies will purchase the placing awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd from the
Regional
Director. Awards are to be designed by the combined efforts of the
Regional Director, Competition Committee, and problem sponsor. Names
of the participating sponsors will be highlighted on each award placing.
Award uniformity is to be maintained. They are also financially
responsible for the "judges room" that has been set on reserve by
Region IV at the event center. There is one parlor room reserved and specifically set up
for each construction division. They are located on the third floor.
Contact reservation desk to complete the reservation.
-
The
major sponsor has the responsibility to announce their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
place winners at the awards ceremony for their respective division.
The responsibilities of the assisting sponsorship are as follows:
-
Coordinate efforts with the major sponsor to review problem statement and
judging critique sheets.
-
Aid in judging and placing deliberations. Compile results and rank
the entire division.
-
Provide written judging evaluations/suggestions
and ranking for all competition teams in
your division.
